How Great Leaders Inspire Action

After perusing the TED website, I came across an older video from 2009. This video really explained the core foundation in becoming a successful leader, which is a lot of what we discuss in class. How do we get our employees, staff, volunteers to want to be a part of our healthcare system? What are our healthcare values?

Patients and employees are not going to go to a healthcare system whose values do not align with theirs, despite the exception of unavoidable emergencies. Catholic hospitals will not attract Jewish or Atheist patients. Why? Because they do not align in their beliefs. This TED Talk perfectly analyzes the human brain and how to market your organization or thoughts based on purpose. Why do you do what you do, and why should we join you?

Simon Sinek describes to us the idea of the golden circle. Most marketing teams describe what they are selling and how they are selling it, but describe their why last or not at all. Our brain works from the limbic system out to the neocortex, from feelings to language and rational thought. Marketers and leaders but address their ideas and products in a similar fashion. You have to win over your audience with the why. Why do you believe what you believe, and do I believe the same thing?

Healthcare is an extremely biased system, because everyone has different thoughts on how they expect their care to be handled. Does one believe in abortions and birth control or not? Does one expect state of the art technology and research or a more private clinic or hospital? It is all about how the patient's expect to be treated.

As future leaders, we need to understand our organization's mission, vision, and values enough to spread it through the facility. The staff we recruit and higher, from house-keeping to physicians, need to understand why we exist, and why we believe in bettering healthcare. Without the why there is no business.
