Healthcare Jobs to Grow by 4 Million by 2026

In a recent article published by HFMA, they discussed the expected increase in Healthcare jobs. For us who will be graduating in the next 1-3 years, this sounds like there will be plenty of opportunities for employment. But this article shows the current dilemmas faced in healthcare staffing.

While healthcare is worried about lower reimbursement rates from insurers, there is still a large expected increase in the jobs available in the industry. Healthcare is a field that relies heavily on technology, and as it advances, the need for skilled workers increases. However, the issue comes in with regards to worker compensation.

With the expected reimbursement declines as well as the need for more staff, hospitals and other healthcare providers are looking for ways to lower employee benefits, insurance, and pensions. This is the issue we will be facing as recent grads as we enter the field.

This article discusses the idea of reimbursement based on productivity. This would give healthcare workers an incentive to be productive and see many patients. This issue I see here is that the pressure for high productivity can lower healthcare quality. Doctors will feel the need to rush through patients to ensure they receive a competitive salary, but some patients may need more time with a doctor.

As reimbursement to hospitals is decreasing, the need for money is higher than ever. Unfortunately, this effects the workers and ultimately the patients who come for care. As healthcare becomes more and more unaffordable, and more of a business, I feel that patients will end up suffering more.

Healthcare growth has been above the national growth averages, but there are many obstacles that healthcare will be facing in the next few years.

  1. That's an interesting question - will patients suffer? I think it depends on a lot of factors, one of which is will we have a policy regime that will allow creative healthcare providers to thrive?
